Steel Tiffin Day in Pune: A Student Pledge for a Zero-Waste Future

Pune Steel Tiffin Day on 4 Feb is a city-wide student pledge for waste reduction at source. Join the school pledge and family pledge with MCC.

A city-wide pledge for waste reduction at source

On 4th February, students across Pune City will take the Steel Tiffin Pledge — a simple but powerful commitment to shift from disposable lunch habits to reusable practices.

This is not a one-day event.
It is a milestone in a longer transition towards waste reduction at source, with real adoption planned from June 2026.

A steel tiffin is our symbol — not just a lunch box — but a reminder that small daily choices, when taken by many, create collective impact.

What is Steel Tiffin Day and why does it matter?

Steel Tiffin Day is a pledge day that encourages students to choose healthier options.

When we talk about sustainability, most conversations stop at “how to manage waste.”
But the real solution lies upstream: reduce waste before it is created.

A steel tiffin represents that shift —
from waste management → to waste reduction at source.

Mission City Chakra (MCC): The journey so far

Mission City Chakra (MCC), Centre for Sustainable Development, Gokhale institute of Politics and Economics is a Pune-based initiative working towards a Zero-Waste City by focusing on upstream sustainability solutions.

Over the past two and a half years, MCC has worked closely with more than 700 schools and 3.5 lac students across Pune through:

  • meetings with principals and school leadership

  • student awareness sessions

  • teacher interactions

  • parent engagement

  • conversations with intermediate policymakers and city stakeholders

MCC appeal is simple,

  • No Plastic Tiffin Box
  • No Plastic Water Bottle
  • No Plastic/ Laminated Textbook covers

140 schools have already implemented it.

This groundwork has created a strong WHY behind the shift — because lasting change happens when people understand and own the purpose.

Steel Tiffin Day is the culmination of this ongoing effort, and a shared milestone for the entire city.

What will happen on 4th February in Pune schools?

On 4 February, participating schools will conduct a short pledge in classrooms or assemblies.

Students will take the Steel Tiffin Pledge
Class teachers will record student attendance
Principals will confirm the final school total
✅ MCC will compile the totals from all schools and announce the final city-wide participation number

The pledge is designed to be simple, inclusive, and seamless — so every school can participate without disrupting the academic schedule.

Students can take the pledge in their respective classroom or all together in the assembly. This pledge should not be  a cause of disturbance for the school schedule. Schools are free to decide the way.

Take the Family Steel Tiffin Pledge (Online)

A long-term habit becomes easier when families and schools move together.
That’s why MCC is also inviting families to take a simple online pledge on or before 4 February.

The steel tiffin is a symbol, but the intention is bigger:
to build everyday habits that prevent waste, starting at home.

✅ Take the pledge as a family
✅ Encourage your child and school
✅ Become part of Pune’s transition to waste reduction at source
