Mission City Chakra is an initiative of the Centre for Sustainable Development, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, working towards waste prevention and circular economy solutions for cities.

The school segment of MCC works with schools to reduce waste generation through policy changes rather than one-time awareness campaigns.

Problem

Many schools generate significant quantities of plastic waste every day.

Three common sources are:

• Plastic water bottles
• Plastic lunch boxes
• Plastic textbook covers

Most waste management programs focus on collecting and recycling waste after it has been generated.

Mission City Chakra chose to focus on preventing the waste from being generated in the first place.

Solution

Mission City Chakra works with school managements to adopt simple school-wide policies that encourage non-plastic alternatives.

The three key appeals are:

Steel Water Bottles

Students are encouraged to use steel bottles instead of plastic bottles.

Steel Lunch Boxes

Students are encouraged to bring food in steel containers instead of plastic lunch boxes.

Non-Plastic Textbook Covers

Schools are encouraged to avoid plastic textbook covers and adopt reusable or paper-based alternatives.

Schools influence habits during childhood.

A practice adopted in school often becomes a lifelong habit.

Unlike individual awareness campaigns, school policies create a supportive environment where sustainable behaviour becomes the norm.

The MCC model treats sustainability as a policy issue rather than an awareness issue.

Instead of asking individual students to make isolated choices, the school itself becomes the decision-maker.

मिशन सिटी चक्र हा गोखले इन्स्टिट्यूट ऑफ पॉलिटिक्स अँड इकॉनॉमिक्सच्या सेंटर फॉर सस्टेनेबल डेव्हलपमेंटचा उपक्रम आहे. शहरांमधील कचरा निर्मिती कमी करणे आणि परिपत्र अर्थव्यवस्थेला चालना देणे हे या उपक्रमाचे उद्दिष्ट आहे.

MCC चा शाळा विभाग कचरा निर्माण झाल्यानंतर त्याचे व्यवस्थापन करण्याऐवजी कचरा निर्माणच होऊ नये यासाठी शालेय धोरणांवर काम करतो.

समस्या

शाळांमधून दररोज मोठ्या प्रमाणावर प्लॅस्टिक कचरा निर्माण होतो.

त्यातील तीन प्रमुख स्रोत म्हणजे:

मिशन सिटी चक्रने कचरा निर्माण होण्यापूर्वीच तो टाळण्याचा मार्ग निवडला.
