Karishma Shoppy – Saying “No” to Plastic Since 2000

A Small Shop with a Remarkably Strong Environmental Commitment

Every sustainability journey begins with a decision. Sometimes it is a large government policy. Sometimes it is a technological breakthrough. And sometimes, it begins in a neighbourhood grocery shop.

For nearly four decades, Karishma Shoppy, located near Nal Stop on Karve Road in Pune, has quietly demonstrated that protecting the environment does not always require large investments or sophisticated technology.

Sometimes it simply requires the courage to say, “We will not provide plastic carry bags.”

Mission City Chakra is proud to welcome Karishma Shoppy to the Pune Sustainability Map.

A Decision Taken Long Before It Became Fashionable

Karishma Shoppy began its journey in 2000.

At that time, there were no government restrictions on plastic carry bags.

There were no campaigns against single-use plastics.

Climate change was not part of everyday conversations.

Plastic pollution had not yet become a national concern.

Yet Mr. Manoj Jaju and his brother made a conscious decision.

Their shop would never provide plastic carry bags.

Not temporarily. Not until a law required it. But as a permanent business policy.

Nearly twenty-six years later, that promise remains unchanged.

No Plastic Bags. No Exceptions.

Many businesses display notices asking customers to carry their own bags.

Few follow the policy consistently.

At Karishma Shoppy, the rule is simple.

No plastic carry bags are provided.

There are no hidden charges.

There is no paid plastic bag option.

There are no exceptions.

Customers are encouraged to bring their own cloth bags or reusable bags whenever they visit.

Over the years, some customers have become upset.

Some have even walked away without making their purchases.

For many businesses, such reactions would have been enough to abandon the policy.

Not here.

The Jaju family believes that their responsibility towards the planet is more important than the convenience of offering disposable bags.

Another Quiet Decision: No Sachets

The shop has taken another remarkable step.

It does not sell shampoo sachets or similar single-use sachet products.

At first glance, a sachet appears insignificant.

It is small. Lightweight. Easy to discard.

But from an environmental perspective, it is one of the most challenging packaging formats ever created.

Most sachets are made of multi-layered plastic (MLP), where layers of plastic and aluminium are tightly bonded together.

This makes them extremely difficult and often economically unviable to recycle.

Because of their small size and mixed material composition, they frequently escape waste collection systems altogether.

Many end up in garbage dumps.

Many are carried into rivers and streams.

Many remain in the environment for decades, gradually breaking down into microplastics that enter soil, water and eventually the food chain.

By choosing not to sell sachets, Karishma Shoppy has addressed a problem at its source.

The most effective waste management strategy is often not recycling.

It is avoiding problematic products in the first place.

A Shop That Chose Principles Over Convenience

Businesses often assume that environmental responsibility comes at the cost of customer satisfaction.

Karishma Shoppy demonstrates that values can also become a business identity.

For nearly forty years, the shop has remained committed to its principles despite changing markets, customer expectations and retail competition.

Its message is simple.

If a product or practice harms the environment, choosing not to participate is also a solution.

Small Shops, Big Impact

A single grocery shop may appear insignificant in a city of millions.

But imagine if every neighbourhood shop in Pune adopted the same policies.

Imagine if every customer routinely carried a reusable bag.

Imagine if problematic packaging like sachets gradually disappeared from retail shelves.

The cumulative impact would be enormous.

Large environmental change often begins with thousands of small decisions made every single day.

A Place Worth Finding

One of the purposes of the Pune Sustainability Map is to help citizens discover businesses that are making responsible choices.

These businesses deserve recognition not only because they reduce waste, but because they demonstrate leadership.

Karishma Shoppy is one such place.

It reminds us that sustainability is ultimately about values.

Sometimes, the most powerful environmental action is not introducing something new.

It is having the conviction to refuse something harmful.

Why It Matters

Long before plastic bans and environmental campaigns became common, Karishma Shoppy voluntarily adopted a strict no-plastic-bag policy and chose not to sell difficult-to-recycle sachets. For nearly four decades, it has shown that small neighbourhood businesses can play a significant role in preventing waste at source and protecting the environment.

“We want more and more citizens to discover such businesses. That is why Mission City Chakra is putting them on the map—literally.”
