Implementation Roadmap for Corporators, CSR Organisations and School Networks
Problem Addressed
Children spend a significant part of their day in school. Every day, thousands carry drinking water in plastic bottles, bring meals in plastic tiffin boxes, and use plastic or laminated textbook covers.
Rather than attempting to manage plastic waste after it is generated, the Mission City Chakra (MCC) model focuses on preventing waste at source through simple institutional policies adopted by schools.
Project Concept
Mission City Chakra works with school principals, recognising them as intermediate policymakers capable of influencing hundreds of students and families through institutional decisions.
The Phase I model encourages schools to adopt three simple policies:
- Steel water bottles instead of plastic bottles
- Steel tiffin boxes instead of plastic tiffin boxes
- Paper or uncovered textbooks instead of plastic or laminated covers
The school complements these policies with student awareness sessions, parent engagement and recognition of participating schools.
The project therefore creates:
- Reduced plastic exposure for children.
- Reduction in plastic waste generated every school day.
- Behaviour change extending from schools to families.
- A scalable model for creating Zero-Waste Schools
Why Schools?
- Schools influence daily habits.
- Principals can institutionalise sustainable practices through policy.
- Students carry new habits home.
- One policy decision reaches hundreds of families simultaneously.
Instead of changing one individual at a time, the model creates system-wide behaviour change.

Protecting Children’s Health
Dear Parents,
As part of our commitment to student health and environmental responsibility, the school requests all students to use:
✅ Steel Water Bottle

✅ Paper / No Textbook Covers
Together we can reduce plastic exposure for our children while preventing unnecessary waste.
