E-Waste Collection

Help schools and families dispose of electronic waste responsibly.

Schools generate e-waste themselves—but they can also become convenient collection centres for e-waste from their community.

Why Should Schools Collect E-Waste?

Old electronics contain valuable materials as well as components that require responsible handling.

A school can therefore create a simple system where:

How Can a School Organise an E-Waste Drive?

1. Identify an authorised recycler

Before announcing the drive, establish what the recycler accepts and how the material will be collected.

2. Announce the drive

Inform students, parents, teachers and staff that they can bring eligible e-waste from home.

3. Collect

Create a clearly marked collection point for the duration of the drive.

4. Hand over responsibly

The collected material should go to the authorised recycling channel arranged by the school.

What Can Students Bring?

Accepted items vary between collection partners. Please check the list provided by your recycling partner before the drive.

Before You Recycle, Check If It Can Be Reused

Not every old electronic item is waste. If a device is still functional, consider repair, donation or reuse before sending it for recycling.

Schools can encourage families to ask:
Can someone else use this? Can it be repaired? Can it be reused?

Recycling should be the option when an electronic item has genuinely reached the end of its useful life.

Make It a Community Drive

Don’t collect only what the school generates.
Invite students, parents, teachers and staff to bring eligible e-waste from home.

A school can therefore help solve a problem that exists beyond its own premises.

Before You Start

A small checklist:

☐ Identify authorised recycling partner
☐ Confirm accepted items
☐ Decide collection dates
☐ Announce the drive to parents
☐ Set up a secure collection area
☐ Record quantities collected
☐ Document the handover

Do not dismantle electronic equipment at school.

Keep the school’s role as collection and responsible channelisation

After the Drive

Don’t let the story end with:

“We collected 87 kg of e-waste.”

Ask the recycler for whatever documentation or information they can provide about the handover and recycling process.

Students can then understand:

Collection → Channelisation → Recycling

rather than simply:

Waste → Gone

Inform Parents about the project for a meaningful engagement
