Plastic-Free School Essentials Program

Based on the Mission City Chakra School Policy Model

This page provides a project overview free of cost.

Organizations interested in implementing the project can request a detailed implementation roadmap or a roadmap with communication and awareness toolkit.

Project Overview

Problem Addressed

Schools generate significant quantities of plastic waste every day.

Three common sources are:

  • Plastic Water Bottles
  • Plastic Lunch Boxes
  • Plastic Textbook Covers

Most waste management projects focus on collection and recycling after waste is generated.

The Mission City Chakra model focuses on preventing waste generation at source through school-level policy adoption.

Project Concept

Work with school managements to adopt simple school-wide policies encouraging:

  • Steel Water Bottles
  • Steel Lunch Boxes
  • Non-Plastic Textbook Covers

Instead of distributing products, the project encourages schools to make these practices part of their culture and expectations.

The project therefore creates:

  1. Long-term reduction in plastic waste generation.
  2. Behaviour change among students and families.
  3. Institutional adoption of sustainable practices.
  4. A self-sustaining model with minimal recurring costs.

Why Schools?

  • Schools influence habits during childhood.
  • School policies can influence thousands of students simultaneously.
  • Students carry habits into their homes.
  • One policy decision can create lasting impact for years.

A single school policy can influence hundreds or thousands of students every academic year.
